twin springs is a small tourist town in california; its eponymous set of springs feed two lakes that attract kayakers year round. best friends and recent high school graduates, vera moore & sage landen, are in town to see if they can find something more interesting than boating in twin springs: at the recommendation of a moderator on one of vera's frequented paranormal sighting forums, they are hunting for aliens, or for magic.

troy, who has lived in twin springs for 3 years, doesn't need to hunt. she's a werewolf, & changes into a huge white animal every full moon. sly, gruff, & simultaneously territorial, she makes a living selling her handmade goods to tourists, & she makes her fun telling them tall tales about magic in town. she gets nervous, though, when vera & sage get too close to the truth.

troy is protective of her lover, lilis, & does everything in her power to keep sage & vera from the truth of her own existence & that of lilis. lilis, a golden-eyed & fully amphibious woman capable of living underwater for weeks at a time, fled a bad relationship & to twin springs. her ex-boyfriend, ares, would pursue her anywhere.

of course, ares goes by another name online, & it is at his behest that vera & sage went to twin springs. they don't know that he's a jackass, though, & it's a comedy of errors from there as they try to find the truth about him & about twin springs.
